It's a family affair! When HRCF Vice President Léo Kabalisa returned to Rwanda after peace was restored in 1996, he chose the Tumurere Foundation to receive HRCF funding. Tumurere was not only providing relief to students who had lost parents and homes ... Tumurere was bringing them together as well as fostering healthy friendships and a sense of family cohesion among young people who no longer had traditional family supports.
Tumurere students are supported by the staff which includes social workers and a psychologist. When they bring their report cards in to renew funding and pick up school supplies for the term, they meet adults that take a parental concern in their progress. Staff make visits during the term to students in difficulty and take time to touch base with each student when they come into the office. In December they gather as a family to celebrate Christmas. Students see board members as parents. Board members accompany students who graduate from university, and they are present to celebrate their successes or to comfort them in times of sorrow. |
